Ex-hact-lay

Yes, more Youtube tomfoolery! This time an instructional film put out by the GEC (methinks) in 1937, all about how housewives should use their new electric cookers to full frugal, clean and nutritional advantage. I find this stuff interesting as I have a few cook books which were given free to householders who bought a new electric cooker and it's nice to put the books into context. Anyway, I'm sure you lovers of vintage will enjoy this, but be warned you American gals, when the women on the film talk about preparing a "joint" or putting a "joint" in the oven they mean a "roast"...although the lady on the left does look slightly squiffy and has trouble keeping up with what the other woman is saying...

My favorite line is that for the first time womens' cooking problems have been studied by twentieth century minds and solved in a twentieth century fashion.

I've just come across your blog and love it! And this clip was great. I can just picture my grandmother (though she was an American--imagine one of the actresses in this film sounding like a character in Steel Magnolias) having this deep conversation about electric cookers. What would we be having the conversation about today, I wonder?

Hi Marie
Oh, yes, I noticed that line too. Splendid!

Hi Left-Handed
Thank you for visiting. My great aunt was a war bride and she would send my granny photographs of American appliances so they could compare notes between British and American versions!

What would we be talking about? Hmm, ipods and hair straighteners, methinks.
