"I Want it to Cook it for Ever Such a Long Time!"

It is obvious that today I'm on a bit of a rural idyll kick. I love this Youtube clip, I'm going to watch it over and over again and weep for an England I never knew.

Poor Jane, that Sally knows everything there is to know about cooking cabbages, she's such a cabbage know-it-all. Also, I'm surprised that Granny Inglestone wasn't tougher with those boys, my granny would've given them a clout round the ear for scrapping at the table...but perhaps the fact that the boys were fighting over tidbits of cabbage was too much of a shock for her old nerves and she didn't behave in her usual no-nonsense way.

Wow, imagine making a film about how to cook cabbbage properly...I'm with you about Granny...that woman had self-control!

Wasn't it so nice though...such simple times...

love, Tina :)

That was *very* entertaining! Fleshes out my mental images for the Swallows and Amazons series nicely. And that Sally was a real Deborah Madison with her cooking water, wasn't she? I'll never drain mine again!

I haven't time to watch right now, will pop back at a more opportune time.

Oh my, I've never seen children fight over cabbage before ;)

What a great film. Good ol' Grandma. I loved that they cook on the fire, how wonderful.

Hi Tina
I think it was a war-time film, hence the obsession with the food value of the cabbage!

Hi Laura
Oh, I love Swallows and Amazons. Yes, she was such a good girl to save the cooking water!

Hi Sarah
I know, would you want Alan coming to tea? I feel sorry for David, that Alan's a pain stealing all of the cabbage.

Boys fighting over cabbage?! I thought about many things as a young boy, but fighting over cabbage wasn't one of them-ha! Grandma probably thought it was a MIRACLE, so she didn't want to stop them...

Hi Mark

You made me laugh. Yes, there is something vaguely miraculous about boys fighting over cabbage...
