But Emily Loved Him...

Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss
Old fat furry cat-puss
Wake up and look at this thing that I bring
Wake up, be bright
Be golden and light
Bagpuss, Oh hear what I sing

RIP, Mr Postgate

We never had Bagpuss shows but I know we would have loved him - I love Mr Postgate's voice - and the way he started the story - "Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there once was a little girl"

*happy sigh*

You can feel yourself snuggle in for a good story.

I wrote about kitties today too - with a little help from Walter de la Mare.

Thanks for introducing me to this series - I hope I can find some on Youtube.

Honestly, dulce domum, you are the holder of past treasures, and utterly unknown treasures to those of us who live so far away. I loved this voice, and those words. Now I'll go look it up. Thank you.

Now I feel so-o-o-o-o old- Bagpuss was the one my children loved- I was a Noggin The Nog Girl!
But we are all agreed, OIliver P had the loveliest voice for storytelling! x

A real nostalgic treat.

Did you used to watch Ivor the Engine? Another of Postgate's creations apparently. I loved Ivor.

Thanks for this. I was too old (eek!) for Bagpuss when he first appeared but have come to love him through my children's devotion to the DVDs. Absolutely agree with Angela that Oliver Postgate has the loveliest voice for storytelling. As soon as I hear it, even now, I feel all snuggly. I have posted a clip (the only one available) of a little-remembered Postgate/Firmin creation: the Pingwings. I have never come across anyone else who remembers them. Please let me know if you do!

Hi Kathie
I feel a bit sad that you Canadians have been deprived of Bagpuss. You're so right about his voice, absolutely comforting. I think there's quite a bit of Bagpuss of Youtube. Enjoy!

Hi Nan
Enjoy looking him up! Monix, Juliet and Angela have clips from other Postgate/Firmin children's programmes. They're all lovely.

Hi Angela
My husband (who's a little bit older than me) was the Noggin fan. I think Noggin was formative in developing his reading tastes...from Noggin he went onto the Hobbit...and read Beowulf at university...Oh, I'm 35 so I was just the right age for the beginning of Bagpuss.

Hi Sarah
Oh, Jones the Steam. I loved Ivor the Engine. I'm making the steam engine noise as I type!

Hi Juliet
I can't remember the Pingwings, but was born in 1973, so they may be a bit early for me. I'll ask the DHwhen he gets back from Sweden if he remembers them. Bagpuss really influenced me...all of that folk music and recycling...

HI Tina
At the risk of sounding like an old fogy..."they don't make 'em like that any more do they?"
